The delivery of environmentally friendly products is important to Altera and its customers. We do this by designing products that have the lowest power consumption, by creating products that are RoHS-compliant, and by improving our facilities to reduce the amount of waste produced.
Lower Power Consumption
Each individual programmable logic device (PLD) Altera produces consumes a very small amount of power. However, when you consider the total power consumed by the hundreds of millions of products Altera ships, we clearly have an obligation to implement low-power designs. Altera has a considerable investment in technology that develops ways to reduce the power consumption of our devices.
Our Stratix® and Cyclone® series FPGAs, MAX® II CPLDs, and HardCopy® ASICs are driving the company’s growth. The newest members of these families offer dramatic improvements in lower power consumption (see Table 1).
| Table 1. Altera's Low-Power Devices | |
| Device | Description |
|---|---|
| Cyclone IV | Our Cyclone Series FPGAs are optimized for low power to help manage thermal requirements, reduce or eliminate system cooling costs, and extend battery life in a wide variety of applications. Cyclone IV lowers power by up to 25 percent compared to previous generation Cyclone products. |
| Stratix IV | Our Stratix devices provide the highest performance in the industry while Stratix IV FPGAs lead the FPGA industry in low power consumption for high-end FPGAs. |
| HardCopy IV | Our HardCopy IV ASICs have competitive low power consumption with standard-cell ASIC solutions. They feature a typical 50 percent power reduction from the Stratix IV FPGA prototype and lead the FPGA industry in low power consumption. |
| MAX IIZ | Since its introduction, Altera’s MAX II CPLD family has shown a strong commitment to low power applications. Continuing this commitment is the new zero-power MAX IIZ CPLD, which combines the industry’s lowest dynamic power consumption, with the industry’s lowest standby power consumption. |
RoHS-Compliant Products and Packaging
Altera maintains one of the most extensive RoHS-compliant product offerings in the industry, with over 1,200 products. Altera has shipped over 80 million RoHS-compliant products since 2002.
