Altera was green before it was cool to be green. The following table shows Altera's green initiatives timeline.

Year Description
1983
  • Altera was founded
1987
  • Trash reduction and shipping container reuse initiated
1991
  • Initiated aluminum, glass, paper, and plastic container recycling 
1995
  • Site search for new company headquarters initiated. Altera identifies a commute-friendly location adjacent to light rail public transportation within Silicon Valley’s “Golden Triangle”.
1996
  • New Campus
    • Energy efficient designs integrated into new buildings
      • Outside air economizers installed on all air conditioning systems
      • Energy management system installed to control all lighting and HVAC equipment
      • High output energy efficient lighting systems
    • Exceeded title 24 requirements at the time of build
1997
  • Installed cooling tower water meter as part of water conservation effort
  • Began cardboard recycling program
  • Implemented paperless document control system
1999
  • Converted software data books to CD
  • Installed light sensors in common areas and conference rooms to save energy
2000
  • Converted hardcopy design documents to paperless design document system
  • Initiated coffee mug program: Installed dishwashers in all coffee stations and removed all paper and Styrofoam cups from the campus
2001
  • Implemented battery recycling program
  • Implemented fluorescent light bulb recycling program
  • Implemented computer equipment recycling program
  • Implemented wood, foam, and metals recycling program
  • Replaced plastic transparencies and overhead projectors with conference room computers and displays
  • Converted paper customer communications to paperless customer communication system
2003
  • Initiated cubicle sensor installation project for energy conservation
2004
  • Altera certified as Santa Clara County’s first green semiconductor company
  • Installed variable frequency drives on three 225-ton chillers and saved ~220 MWH annually
2006
  • Converted product manuals, documentation, and software to electronic distribution
  • Replaced constant duty 125-hp compressor with 125-hp VFD compressor and saved ~ 350 MWH annually
2007
  • Reduced campus lighting by 40 percent as part of energy conservation effort
  • Partnered with PG&E and APC on cold aisle containment concepts and analysis in our main data center and saved 392.9 MWH, resulting in a 25% reduction in cooling costs
2008
  • Altera recertified as a Santa Clara County Green Business 
  • Installed WeatherTrak ET irrigation controllers and saved approximately 3 million gallons of water annually 
  • Installed a cold aisle containment system in our software data center and saved ~228 MWH, resulting in a 35% reduction in cooling costs
2009
  • VM ware server consolidations in our data centers saved 346 MWH annually 
  • Replaced metal halide fixtures with fluorescent fixture in Altera parking garage and saved ~180 MWH annually
