Intern Programs in Toronto

The Toronto Technology Centre offers two types of intern programs.

Co-op Engineering Program

Our four-month co-op engineering positions are typically offered three time per year.  We participate with universities across Canada to help us identify and match the best students for these positions.

Although not all universities offer a formal co-op matching program, we invite students from all universities to apply to Altera's Toronto office by contacting our local Human Resources representative at canada_recruit@altera.com.

PEY (Professional Engineering Year) Program

The Toronto Technology Centre also participates in the University of Toronto's PEY internship program. This program is managed by the University of Toronto's PEY department and is only open to University of Toronto students. This is a 12 to 16 month internship which typically commences in January, May, or September.

Students of the University of Toronto can participate in the PEY matching program by visiting the University of Toronto's PEY website at peyonline.com.

POSITIONS TYPICALLY AVAILABLE

Software Engineering Positions—Optimization Algorithm and Software Infrastructure Development

As a Software Engineer, you will develop new algorithms and enhance the software infrastructure of Altera's Quartus®  II Computer-Aided Design (CAD) system. Areas of new algorithm development include physical synthesis, placement and routing, and incremental compilation techniques. These are among the most computationally difficult problems in CAD, and finding algorithms with better result quality and reduced CPU time is a very challenging problem. Software infrastructure projects include developing new circuit visualization tools, new graphical user interfaces, and more efficient and powerful databases and data structures. Altera's Quartus II CAD system is a very large and full-features software program, leading to many interesting software engineering questions.

Successful candidates will be working towards or have completed a degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or Computer Science. Knowledge of C/C++ and strong software engineering skills are required. Gate-level circuit design, experience with scripting languages such as Perl and Tcl, and experience with FPGA CAD tools are assets.

Hardware Engineering Positions—Hardware Simulator and Model Development

Accurate modeling and simulation of the delay, power demand, and signal integrity of 90 nm and below semiconductor technology is a highly challenging yet critical problem. In this position, you will develop models and simulation engines that accurately predict the power dissipated and speed achieved by designs implemented in Altera's devices. These models and engines will be integrated into Altera's Quartus II CAD system and used by tens of thousands of Altera customers.

Successful candidates will be working towards or have completed a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or Computer Science. Knowledge of C/C++ and gate-level circuit design, and strong circuit analysis skills are required. Experience with HSPICE and transistor-level circuit design is an asset. Interns in this position will be working on the cutting edge of semiconductor technology, and will develop models and engines within Altera's Quartus II CAD system that will be used by tens of thousands of Altera customers.
