Altera Stars in SANYO’s Latest Home Theater Projector

Image Processing Functionality of Cyclone II FPGA and Nios II Embedded Processor Provides SANYO’s PLV-Z2000 Projector With Ultra-Crisp Contrast

San Jose, Calif. , January 7, 2008—Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) today announced that SANYO Electric Co.’s PLV-Z2000 1080p home theater projector leverages the Cyclone® II FPGA and Nios® II embedded processor to deliver new levels of visual quality for home entertainment systems. The advanced image processing capabilities of Altera’s combined FPGA and embedded processor solution provide SANYO’s latest home theater projector with a contrast ratio of 15,000:1. With Altera’s solution, product innovators like SANYO enjoy a high level of integration and functionality at a tremendous value. SANYO will be demonstrating its PLV-Z2000 1080p home theater projector in its booth at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, January 7 to 10, 2008.

“Altera’s FPGA and embedded processor technology provides a unique mix of functionality, performance and value that is optimal for our goal of achieving the highest visual quality,” said K. Sugimura, general manager of engineering department, projector division, SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. “With Altera’s solution, we are able to achieve higher integration and deliver many sophisticated capabilities in our PLV-Z2000 projector. In addition, Altera’s promising new Cyclone III FPGAs ensure we can continue to reach new heights of image quality with our future products.”

In its component selection process, SANYO determined the Nios II embedded processor delivered the performance that met their image enhancement requirements. Altera’s solution enables SANYO’s home theater projector to deliver rich, deep, and accurate color resolution, great contrast, and a smooth film-like picture, as well as seven pre-set calibrations for various types of dark room and ambient light viewing.

As a result of several enhancements, including floating-point performance, hardware acceleration, and automated acceleration of C-code routines, the Nios II embedded processor continues to be the overall performance leader among soft processors. A recent report by a leading market research firm named the Nios II processor core the FPGA industry’s most widely used soft processor based on design starts.

“The powerful combination of our Cyclone II FPGA and Nios II embedded processor provide designers an optimal vehicle to implement advanced image processing capabilities at a tremendous value,” said Danny Biran, senior vice president of product and corporate marketing at Altera. “SANYO’s PLV-Z2000 provides home theater enthusiasts a unique entertainment experience and we are pleased to be a key component in this feature-rich full high-definition home projector.”
