Altera's AMPP Program Announces Availability of 64-bit PCI Bus Target Megafunction
- Optimized for Both FLEX® 10K and FLEX 6000 Device Architectures
- Supports Burst transfers up to 266 Mbytes/second
San Jose, Calif., April 6, 1998--Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR) today announced the availability of a 64-bit PCI Bus Target megafunction through its industry-leading Altera Megafunction Partners Program (AMPPSM)
The 64-bit PCI Bus Target megafunction, developed by PLD Applications of Paris, France, runs at speeds of 33MHz, in compliance with PCI Local Bus Specification Rev. 2.1, and supports burst transfers up to 266 Mbytes/second. In addition, Altera has verified this megafunction and recommends it for applications like networking and wireless communications that require high-speed data transfer.
"The 64-bit PCI megafunction solidifies Altera's leadership position in providing Altera PLD users with the broadest range of high-performance PCI megafunctions available for programmable logic," said Bob Beachler, Altera's director of development tools marketing.
Advanced PCI Megafunction
The interface between this PCI megafunction and an external user application is realized through an internal back-end design, built from the PLD's free resources. The PCI Bus Target megafunction provides a simple and flexible interface between the PCI bus and a user-developed back-end design. To support this environment, the megafunction comes with a set of back-end reference designs available in Altera Hardware Description Language or VHDL, which designers can use "as is" or customize for their own projects.
"PLD Applications has consistently offered Altera customers complete PCI solutions covering a wide range of Altera devices," said Stephen Lautzenhiser, Altera's AMPP program manager. The 64-bit PCI Bus also features a fully customizable core, zero-wait state data transfers and compile times under 10 minutes on either the FLEX® 10K family, which offers a unique embedded architecture, or the FLEX 6000 family, whose OptiFLEXTM architecture allows cost structures competitive to gate arrays. This megafunction easily meets the PCI performance thresholds using only 440 logic cells; this is equivalent to 25% of an economical FLEX 10K30A-3 for 3.3V compliance or 33% of a FLEX 6016-2 for 5.0V compliance.
Pricing & Availability
The 64-bit PCI Bus Target megafunction is currently available for evaluation via Altera's OpenCoreTM capability, at no charge, through PLD Application's website at http://www.plda.com. Pricing for an encrypted netlist begins at $9,500 and includes a symbol file, timing assignments, a simulation file, and an installation guide.
About AMPP
The Altera Megafunction Partners Program, established in August 1995, was created to bring the advantages of design reuse to users of Altera PLDs. AMPP is an alliance between Altera and developers of megafunctions that encourages megafunction development. Altera provides technical information and training to the AMPP partners, who create megafunctions, targeted for Altera programmable logic devices. More information about AMPP is available on the Altera web site at http://www.altera.com.
