Altera & Integrated Silicon Systems Celebrate Successful Implementation of Intellectual Property for PLDs

  • 24 ISS DSP Megafunctions Optimized for Altera PLDs
  • Customers Confirm Performance and Integration Benefits

San Jose, Calif., August 24, 1998—Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR) and Integrated Silicon Systems (ISS) today celebrated a milestone of three years of continuous success providing their mutual customers with megafunctions, intellectual property (IP) cores optimized for Altera's industry-leading programmable logic devices (PLDs). From the inception of the Altera Megafunction Partners Program (AMPPSM) in August 1995 - the first program of its kind in the PLD industry - ISS has afforded Altera's customers with highly-customized megafunctions which are optimized for digital signal processing (DSP) applications.

"Altera salutes Integrated Silicon Systems' groundbreaking work in the area of DSP intellectual property for PLDs," said Craig Lytle, senior director of Altera's IP business unit and product planning. "Our long-standing partnership has resulted in a number of positive implementations by our mutual customers. This relationship is a testament both to the potential of intellectual property in PLD-based designs, and to the importance of the AMPP program."

"Integrated Silicon Systems is proud to be a founding partner in Altera's AMPP program," said J.G. Doherty, president and CEO of ISS. "Our customized DSP megafunctions have enabled customers, such as Rockwell Semiconductor Systems, to realize time-to-market advantages. Altera's low-cost PLD solutions ensure that PLD-based designs using ISS cores are easily and seamlessly implemented in Altera devices for high-volume production." ISS has been especially successful in delivering high-performance Error Control Coding functions such as Reed-Solomon and Viterbi to the Altera customer base.

Megafunctions from Altera and its AMPP partners enable designers to integrate increasingly complex functions onto a single programmable logic device, providing significant savings in design time and board space while increasing the efficiency and performance of designs for a wide variety of applications. All megafunctions, whether MegaCore™ products provided by Altera or megafunctions provided by AMPP partners, can be customized by the user.

In addition to providing mutually beneficial services to their customers, participants in Altera's AMPP program are afforded with advance information on a wide variety of Altera products and tools, including the new FLEX® 10KE and Raphael programmable logic device families. Customers, of course, also benefit from the program through a wide selection of megafunctions, which are parameterized for customization to suit individual customer needs. Each core is specifically optimized for use with Altera's PLD product families and is supported by a robust development environment including support of tools from leading third-party EDA vendors.

About ISS

Integrated Silicon Systems supplies specialist intellectual property (IP) for digital signal processing (DSP) in the form of highest performance soft, firm and hard cores to the telecommunications, wireless, digital broadcasting and multimedia sectors of the electronics industry. The company is recognized for the high quality of its synthesized implementations for ASIC, FPGA and PLD technologies. ISS is unique among IP providers in this respect, using a proprietary technology based on many years of specialist research into VLSI architectures for high-performance DSP. The technology also permits very rapid core development and customization. ISS is an approved third-party supplier of IP to the worldwide customer bases of Altera and other vendors. ISS is an inaugural member of the Virtual Socket Interface Alliance (VSIA), and a founding member of RAPID, the IP developers' business association.
