Altera Appoints Vice President of Europe
High Wycombe, Bucks, U.K., July 24, 1998 -- Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR) today announced that it has appointed Nigel Toon to the position of vice president of Europe. Nigel has been with Altera for 9 years joining in 1989 as a field applications engineer, since this time he has held various positions including European marketing manager and managing director, Europe. He will now assume the title of vice president and managing director of Europe.
"Nigel has been instrumental in achieving a ten-fold increase in sales for Altera in Europe since 1989. In addition, we have opened our new R&D center this year with the focus on Intellectual Property (IP) and chip development for European customers. This appointment is an endorsement of the increasing importance of Europe to the overall business of Altera," stated Rodney Smith, Altera president and chief executive officer.
In this time, there have been vast changes in technology. In 1989, programmable logic enabled engineers to replace glue logic whereas today, with 250,000 gates it is able to address system-level applications. This was affirmed when Altera was recently quoted as being in the top 10 ASIC suppliers of 1997 (source: Dataquest).
