Altera Dedicates New Asian Technical Center Headquarters In Penang, Malaysia

  • Location Provides Proximity to Asian Operations
  • Consolidates Altera's Asian-Pacific Operations Group

San Jose, Calif., October 19, 1998--Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR) today announced the formal dedication of a new Asian Technical Center in Penang, Malaysia. The center consolidates Altera's Asia-Pacific Operations Group, which has operated since 1994 from other locations in Penang. The Asia-Pacific Operations Group is responsible for IC design and test engineering, as well as coordination of regional assembly packaging and test subcontracting activities. The new Penang office, which has been operational for several months, provides Altera personnel with a central location for managing the activities of all of Altera's Asian manufacturing partners in the region. This Asian Technical Center is one of two international operations for Altera; the second, the European Technical Center, was established in High Wycombe in the U.K. in March, 1998.

"Altera is pleased to announce the dedication of our Asian Technical Center in Penang," said Denis Berlan, Altera executive vice president and chief operating officer. "With its proximity to our Asian partners and excellent accommodations for high-tech operations, Penang fits within our plans to better serve the needs of our customers and partners through international expansion."

Built on 2.5 acres at Penang's Technopark, the new 62,000-square-foot facility can accommodate up to 350 employees. As one of three Altera technical centers (the original center is in San Jose), the Penang facility is part of Altera's overall plan to expand research and development efforts worldwide.

Official Opening Ceremony

Altera's chairman, president, and CEO Rodney Smith will officially dedicate the facility on October 20, 1998. He will be accompanied by Mr. Berlan and the Chief Minister of Penang, Dr. Koh Tsu Koon. Mr. Smith and Dr. Koon will sign a plaque as part of the dedication ceremony.
