Altera Ships 50 Millionth MAX® 7128 Programmable Logic Device

  • MAX® 7000 is the Most Popular In-System Programmable (ISP) PLD Architecture Ever
  • Cisco Systems is Recipient of the Historic 50 Millionth Device

San Jose, Calif., October 13, 2000--Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR), a leading supplier of programmable logic devices (PLDs), announced today that it has sold 50 million units of its industry-leading MAX® 7128 device. The total quantity of units sold includes EPM7128, EPM7128A, EPM7128S, and EPM7128B devices. Delivery of the actual 50 millionth unit was made to Cisco Systems, one of Altera's leading networking customers. The success of the MAX 7128 device type has been driven by the Internet revolution, from the earliest Ethernet switches to the most popular Internet routers and next generation optical networking systems. Approximately 70 percent of the MAX 7128 devices shipped were designed into communications systems.

"We plan to maintain and extend our leadership position in the product-term market. The tremendous unit volume of MAX 7000 products has been shipped to over 20,000 customers, validating the industry-wide acceptance of Altera's MAX PLD architecture," said Rodney Smith, chairman, president, and CEO. "In order to ensure we meet and exceed our customers' future needs, we are investing heavily in the development of new MAX products as well as expanding our customer support efforts for users of current MAX products."

"With Altera being a leading supplier to Cisco Systems, we are pleased to be the recipient of the commemorative 50 millionth MAX 7128 device," said Mike Campi, Cisco Systems vice president of global supply management. "Cisco and Altera have a long standing relationship with Altera PLDs having been used in Cisco networking products for a number of years."

The MAX 7128 architecture has been extremely popular since its original introduction in 1991. Of the various MAX 7000 product generations, the MAX 7000A family represents the fastest growing product-term architecture ever with currently 3,000 customers and cumulative sales of over $170 million. This 3.3-volt family has been popular in DSL, VOIP, 3G wireless, high-speed routers, optical switches, and mass storage applications. In its nine-year history, the MAX 7128 device type has accounted for sales of over $750 million to more than 10,000 customers. The recently introduced MAX 7000B devices are exceeding expectations, and offer a unique position in the industry as the only 2.5-V, ISP-based devices currently available.
