Altera Opens Shanghai Office, Strengthens Commitment to Customers in China

San Jose, Calif., July 28, 2000--Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR) today announced the opening of Altera Shanghai. This move substantiates Altera's commitment to working more closely with its customers in China. The Shanghai office will provide Chinese customers with additional technical and sales support, enabling them to fully capitalize on the benefits of programmable logic and system-on-a-programmable-chip design.

The Shanghai office represents the latest step in Altera's long-term expansion and growth strategy in China. The new office will serve as a strong link between Altera's Chinese customers and its Asia Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong. Mr. Zhao Dianfeng, Altera's China district sales manager, will lead the Shanghai office and will be supported by a strong team of field applications engineers. Mr. Zhao will be responsible for sales, customer support, business development, and cultivating customer relationships with the support of Cytech Technology Ltd., Altera's authorized distributor in China.

"With trade globalization and technology advances, China is continuing to undergo a tremendous infrastructure transition. Our customers are vying to keep pace with increasing demand and competition driven by domestic and global markets," said Louie Leung, Altera's regional sales manager for Southeast Asia Pacific. "Altera's mission is to help our customers compete in world markets and enable them to benefit from programmable logic advantages in terms of time-to-market and flexibility. With the establishment of our Shanghai office, we are dedicating resources to enhance our business partnerships in China."

"Shanghai is a well-developed city with an excellent infrastructure for trade and business," said Zhao. "Combined with a convergence of engineering talent, we have complete confidence that investing in Shanghai will be the foundation for further Altera expansion in China."

In addition to the Shanghai office, Altera will launch a localized Chinese language Internet portal customized for its customers in China. The site will serve as an additional resource allowing customers to tap into a global network of resources ranging from downloadable products to design tips and design tools.
