Altera Expands Operations in China with New Applications Engineering Center

  • First Programmable Logic Device Company to Establish a Regional Support Center in Shanghai
  • New Shanghai Applications Engineering Center will Help Support the Fast-Growing Asia Pacific Market

San Jose, Calif., November 16, 2000--Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR), a leading programmable logic device (PLD) supplier, announced today that it will establish the first ever Asia Pacific PLD Applications Engineering Center in Shanghai, China. The Applications Engineering Center is part of Altera's growing network of global technical support centers designed to provide best-in-class service to worldwide customers that are developing system-on-a-programmable-chip designs. The new Asia Pacific PLD Applications Engineering Center will complement Altera's Shanghai office that was opened in July 2000.

"As a leading vendor of programmable logic solutions, strength lies in our expertise to help electronic systems manufacturers shorten development cycles and reduce development costs," said Michael Jacobs, Altera senior vice president of worldwide sales. "Driven by the Internet, China's communications equipment manufacturers are growing at explosive rates. The opening of our Applications Engineering Center in Shanghai benefits regional customers by offering localized engineering support, while continuing Altera's long-term expansion and growth strategy in Asia Pacific."

"We chose Shanghai to locate the Applications Engineering Center because of its concentration of high-quality engineers and well-developed infrastructure. With this Applications Engineering Center, Altera is setting the standard for best-in-class technical support for its Asia Pacific customers," said Ben Lee, Altera vice president of Asia Pacific.

The Applications Engineering Center will provide technical support for customers throughout the entire Asia Pacific region. The center's mission is to assist customers in developing leading-edge systems and improve their time-to-market competitiveness.

"We are pleased to see that Altera has chosen Shanghai as its site for the first PLD Applications Engineering Center for all of Asia Pacific. This is a testimony to China's market expansion and recent advancements in technology. We look forward to Altera's continuing contribution as China moves toward a new economy," said Mr. Xarfuding, Deputy Director of Science and Technology Department of Ministry of Information Industry.

Altera is the leading programmable solutions provider to key telecom equipment manufacturers in Asia Pacific. The company's customers include Datang, Great Dragon, Huawei, LG, Samsung, Shanghai Bell and Zhongxing.
