Altera Speeds Cadant® C4TM Cable Modem Termination System to DOCSIS 1.1 Compliance

APEXTM Devices Allow Next-Generation CMTS to Deliver Wire-Speed Performance

San Jose, Calif., May 17, 2001 -- Developers of broadband communications equipment require reliable, high-performance devices that allow them to meet their customers' needs for better speed, increased services, and higher levels of quality of service (QoS). With this fact in mind, Cadant Inc., a developer of high-speed networking products for the cable industry, chose programmable logic devices (PLDs) from Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR) for its C4 cable modem termination system (CMTS). The C4 is a new generation of CMTS that delivers capabilities that meet or exceed the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSISTM) 1.1 and PacketCableTM requirements. These requirements optimize cable bandwidth utilization and support multiple classes of service, as well as real-time service flows needed for applications such as Internet telephony and streaming media.

"Altera APEXTM 20KE devices provided the performance-intensive elements we needed to achieve the rigorous speed requirements of the DOCSIS 1.1 specification," said Tom Cloonan, corporate technology officer of Cadant. "Capabilities like True-LVDSTM circuitry and on-chip phase-locked loops (PLLs) were a great asset to the design of our C4 CMTS, which as a result offers the high-performance and high-availability features historically found only in true carrier systems such as Class 4 toll-switching equipment."

"We are excited that our programmable logic enables Cadant to provide wire-speed performance and high availability in its C4 CMTS," said Hiro Higuma, Altera's director of communications marketing. "Cable modem users will be able to enjoy more features, better reliability, and more service options as a result of implementing functions in Altera programmable logic rather than software."
