Extreme Networks Chooses Altera's PLDs and HardCopy Devices

Altera's HardCopy Devices to Augment Extreme Networks' Use of PLDs

Santa Clara, Calif.,October 9, 2001 -- Extreme Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR) has chosen Altera Corporation's (Nasdaq: ALTR) new Hard Copy devices to complement the programmable logic devices (PLDs) that are a key component of its Application Switching technology. The core functions of Extreme Networks' SummitPx1 Application Switch were designed, prototyped and produced using Altera's PLDs and intellectual property (IP). Leveraging Altera's complete system-on-a-programmable-chip (SOPC) strategy allows Extreme Networks to maintain the flexibility of its networking product and still stay ahead of the competition by lowering total cost of ownership and speeding up time-to-market.

"As we converted some of the Altera APEX devices in our SummitPx1 into ASICs, we were faced with the difficulty of completely re-qualifying our product design," said Herb Schneider, vice president of engineering at Extreme Networks. "As a strategic partner, Altera recognized our objectives and offered a compelling solution with HardCopy, delivering the time-to-market advantage we were seeking, while eliminating the challenges of re-negotiating IP licenses and major expense of converting to ASIC."

The core technology of Extreme Networks' SummitPx1 Application Switch relies on the re-programmability of Altera's PLDs to ensure compliance for evolving application protocols. At the same time, mature underlying protocols, such as TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and IP (Internet Protocol), are established standards and can be implemented in a masked solution such as HardCopy.

Mr. Schneider continued, "While we envisioned having the re-programmability of PLDs as a key component of our product, augmenting them with Altera's HardCopy devices gives us the best of both worlds. This powerful combination will give our customers optimized performance, lower overall cost, operational simplicity, and the flexibility to bring new levels of functionality to their network environments."

Unlike the conversion programs of third party vendors, Altera takes over the vast majority of the migration process to HardCopy devices, allowing customers to devote precious engineering resources to their core competency.

"To customers such as Extreme Networks who are developing leading edge products, we offer a seamless and convenient solution since they only have to deal with one vendor from start to finish," said Erik Cleage, senior vice president of marketing at Altera. "HardCopy is another piece of our SOPC strategy that is focused on delivering the competitive edge that our customers need to win in their marketplace."

Officially launched this week, Altera's HardCopy program gives customers a cost reduction path that not only reduces the per unit cost of the devices, but saves customers time and engineering resources when migrating designs from high density PLDs into a masked solution for volume production.

About The SummitPx1 Application Switch

Extreme Networks® SummitPx1 Application Switch is the answer to intellectually challenged networking gear. It's the first and only content-aware Application Switch to deliver an unprecedented level of Layer 4-7 intelligence and consistent line-rate Gigabit Ethernet performance to Internet data centers, massive web sites and big enterprises. Equally impressive is that SummitPx1 Application Switch maintains wire-speed no matter how many content-aware forwarding rules are enabled.
