Altera Helps INRANGE Break the SAN Barrier
INRANGE Uses Altera APEX Devices to Overcome 10 Km SAN Distance Limitation
Storage Area Networks Conference, San Jose, Calif., June 5, 2001 -- Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR) announced today that INRANGE Technologies (Nasdaq: INRG), a leader in scalable storage networking solutions, has selected Altera system-on-a-programmable chip (SOPC) products for use in its unique Extended Credit Addressing Facility (XCAF) technology. INRANGE's storage area network (SAN) products make it possible to access data over great distances. Prior to the introduction of XCAF, 10 kilometers was the distance limitation between devices in a SAN. XCAF allows any port in INRANGE's industry-leading FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director to communicate with any other port in a SAN over 100 kilometers. This distance extension enables users to realize the true promise of storage area networks: data that is easier to access, manage, backup, and share regardless of where it is located.
Jay Morris, director of sourcing and supplier development for INRANGE, explained their device selection criteria, "We considered devices from all of the leading programmable logic suppliers. Altera provided the best combination of value, performance, device utilization, and support for this project. Further, the availability of APEX 20KE devices in compact FineLine BGA packages meant that we could minimize board space and maximize our cost effectiveness."
In order to develop the XCAF technology, INRANGE had to meet rigorous performance requirements in their design. "We needed the design to run at over 100 MHz in order to meet our goal of allowing any port in the SAN to communicate with any other port over 100 kilometers away with no performance degradation," said Nick Hannon, vice president of storage network switching development. "The phased-locked loops (PLLs) in the APEX 20KE devices were key to achieving our targeted speed."
"Enabling breakthrough products like those from INRANGE is exactly what Altera SOPC solutions excel at," said Alain Bismuth, vice president of new market development at Altera. "We are excited that our APEX 20KE devices played such an important role in allowing INRANGE to overcome the 10 kilometer SAN barrier."
