Altera Cyclone FPGAs to Power Motorola's Wireless Broadband Internet Access Solution

Cyclone FPGAs Ease Deployment of Broadband Internet Access to Communities

San Jose, Calif., September 23, 2002—Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) and Motorola, Inc., (NYSE: MOT) announced today that Motorola's Canopy wireless internet access system will be powered by Altera's recently announced Cyclone™ FPGAs, reducing its cost and speeding it towards commercial deployment. Motorola, the world's leading supplier of digital set-top boxes and cable modems, chose Cyclone FPGAs for their ability to implement system-level complexity at the lowest cost, a requirement for the Canopy system, which is targeted at residential and small business customers.

"The price/performance ratio of Cyclone FPGAs allows us to keep PLD flexibility for the cost of an ASIC," said Tom Freeburg, corporate vice president and director of Motorola's Broadband Wireless Technology Center. "Our adoption of Cyclone FPGAs has enabled us to implement unparalleled product programmability while still meeting our cost goals."

Cyclone FPGAs are used in both the access points and subscriber modules of the Canopy system. Access points include integrated antennas and are used to distribute wireless service to the surrounding community. Subscriber modules are the Internet access receivers, and are installed at each customer site. A Canopy access point can serve up to 1,200 subscriber modules in all directions. Access points and subscriber modules can be easily upgraded in the field by transmitting Cyclone FPGA reconfiguration information to them, allowing the service provider to accommodate changes in customer demand by making enhancements or adding functionality.

About Motorola's Canopy Technology

The Canopy technology portfolio includes an independent community-sized access point with integrated antennas. Each access point has about a two-mile reach, although the range can be extended up to 10 miles with the Canopy reflector kit. The Canopy components are small, unobtrusive, easy to install and can serve a wide-range of network purposes. The Canopy solution can be deployed as a stand-alone system, or it can be used to extend the reach of wired Internet protocol (IP) distribution systems such as cable and DSL. It also can serve as a redundant IP backhaul for enterprises and service providers further reducing investment costs. About the Cyclone Device Family

Cyclone devices are the industry's lowest-cost FPGAs. With densities ranging from 2,910 to 20,060 logic elements, Cyclone devices feature up to 288 Kbits of embedded memory and are based on a 1.5-V all-layer-copper SRAM process. Cyclone devices offer up to two phase-locked loops (PLLs) per device and a hierarchical clocking structure for extensive on- and off-chip clock management. Each device supports a variety of single-ended I/O standards such as LVTTL, LVCMOS, PCI, and SSTL-2/3. Cyclone devices have dedicated circuitry to interface with high-performance external single data rate (SDR) SDRAM and double data rate (DDR) SDRAM and FCRAM memory devices.
