Altera's Quartus II Design Software Supports Stratix GX Devices

Quartus II Version 2.1 Design Software Supports Stratix GX Device 3.125-Gbps Transceiver Technology and High-Performance Programmable Architecture

San Jose, Calif., November 5, 2002—Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) today announced the availability of a Stratix GX design kit which complements the Quartus® II version 2.1 design software for customers wanting to leverage Altera's latest device family. A beta version of this design software has been in the hands of select customers since June of this year, allowing designers to construct system-on-a-programmable-chip (SOPC) solutions with Altera's second-generation transceiver technology and the industry's most advanced high-performance programmable logic architecture.

The Quartus II version 2.1 design software supports the complete Stratix GX device transceiver design flow by providing behavioral simulation models along with an integrated wizard interface to implement the latest high-speed transceiver protocols such as 10 Gigabit Ethernet XAUI, SONET, or custom protocols in Stratix GX devices. The intuitive wizard interface asks users to select parameters such as protocol, operation mode (duplex, receiver, or transmitter), number of channels, channel width, optional input and output ports, and data rates to fully configure the Stratix GX device transceivers for backplane applications and high-speed chip-to-chip communications.

"Designers will benefit from Altera's experience in integrating high-speed transceivers with programmable logic," said Tim Southgate, Altera's vice president of software and tools marketing. "As the first programmable logic company to deliver an integrated transceiver solution, Altera is well positioned to provide customers with easy-to-use development tools that make multigigabit designs almost effortless."

Stratix GX users can immediately take advantage of the Quartus II software's LogicLock block-based design methodology, advanced timing closure methodology features, and the Signal Tap® II embedded logic analyzer.

Pricing and Availability

Designers can begin their Stratix GX designs immediately by contacting their local Altera sales office for instruction on downloading and installing the Stratix GX design kit for Quartus II version 2.1. The Quartus II design software supports major operating systems, including Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows 98, Sun Solaris, Red Hat Linux, and HP-UX. Altera's software subscription program simplifies the process of obtaining Altera design software by consolidating all software products and maintenance charges into one annual subscription payment. The annual subscription for the Altera design software is $2,000 for a node-locked PC license, which includes full-featured Quartus II and MAX+PLUS® II design software, OEM synthesis tools from Mentor Graphics, OEM simulation tools from Model Technology, and 12 months of software upgrades. New or existing customers may obtain a software subscription at the Programmable eStore on the Altera web site, www.altera.com, or from Altera distributors worldwide.

About Stratix GX FPGAs

The Stratix GX family is Altera's second-generation embedded transceiver family based on a 0.13-µm process technology with 1.5-V core voltage. Stratix GX devices have up to 20 embedded 3.125-Gbps transceivers and up to 45 differential I/O pins with dedicated dynamic phase alignment (DPA) capability supporting up to 1-Gbps source-synchronous data transfers. Stratix GX devices also offer up to 41,250 logic elements (LEs), 3.27 Mbits of TriMatrix memory, 14 DSP blocks, eight phase locked loops (PLLs), Terminator technology for impedance matching and signal integrity and advanced I/O buffers capable of interfacing with high-speed memory devices such as DDR SDRAM, QDR SRAM, QDR II SRAM, ZBT SRAM, DDR FCRAM and SDR SRAM devices.
