Altera's Nios Processor Named One of EDN's Hot 100 Products of 2003

San Jose, Calif., December 18, 2003─Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) today announced that the editors of EDN magazine have named the Nios® embedded processor version 3.0 one of its Hot 100 Products of 2003.

“Of the thousands of products that manufacturers announce each year and the hundreds that EDN reports about, a select few hot products really make our readers sit up and take notice,” said Maury Wright, EDN editor-in-chief.  “From chips to boards to software to test equipment, the 2003 Hot 100 are the products that we, the editors, feel are sure winners.”

With more than 12,000 development kits shipped to date, thousands of designers have selected the Nios embedded processor for its ease-of-use and flexibility, making it one of the most popular embedded processors in the industry. Embedded designers can easily create custom processor-based systems using the SOPC Builder system development tool, part of Altera’s Quartus® II design software.  Unique features such as custom instructions and the simultaneous multi-master Avalon™ switch fabric differentiate the Nios embedded processor from other soft processor solutions currently on the market.

“We are excited that the editors of EDN have chosen to recognize the Nios embedded processor from among the hundreds of other products they write about. This selection mirrors the tremendous enthusiasm we have seen by the Nios development community, as well as its presence on a number of other industry surveys,” said Bob Garrett, senior marketing manager for Nios product marketing at Altera. “Customers have been delighted by the flexibility, performance, and cost optimizations that were unavailable to them through traditional embedded solutions.”

The flexibility of the Nios processor and ease-of-use of its development tools allows customers, across a broad range of applications, to reduce their development time. When implemented in Altera’s low-cost Cyclone™ FPGAs (www.altera.com/cyclone), customers have a compact, low-cost processor that offers greater integration, a smaller overall form factor, lower power consumption, and flexibility not available in any other solution. Nios designs targeting Altera’s Stratix™ FPGAs (www.altera.com/stratix) offer customers a high-performance solution that can address many wireless infrastructures, image processing, and other high-bandwidth applications.
