San Jose, Calif., June 25, 2003—In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) today announced its Stars of Innovation initiative.  Under the initiative, Altera customers are honored for groundbreaking use of programmable logic in their end applications.  The Stars of Innovation honorees represent a wide variety of end markets including communications, broadcasting, storage, consumer, and industrial.  Throughout the rest of the year, Altera will announce and recognize new Stars of Innovation in ceremonies and events to take place at various locations worldwide.

“The Stars of Innovation exemplify the excellence in product development that is made possible by the power and flexibility of Altera programmable solutions,” said John Daane, chief executive officer of Altera.  “The honorees are defining players in their respective fields, and demonstrate through their industry leadership the indispensable advantages that Altera programmable logic offers in bringing compelling products to market in the shortest possible time and at the lowest cost.”

The current Altera Stars of Innovation include:  Alcatel, BlueArc Corporation, Chunghwa Picture Tubes, Ltd., Ciena Corporation, Cisco Systems, Inc., Creo Inc., Extreme Networks, Inc., Foundry Networks, Inc., Harmonic, Inc., Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., IBM Corporation, Juniper Networks, Inc., LG Electronics, Motorola, Inc., NEC, Nokia, Pinnacle Systems, Inc., Sony Corporation, Sun Microsystems, Inc., SynCom Network, Inc., Terayon Communication Systems, Inc., UTStarcom Inc., and Zhongxing Telecom Equipment Corp.

“My sincerest congratulations to Altera on its 20th anniversary,” said Alex Li, sourcing manager of the IC commodity expert group at Huawei Technologies.  “Altera has clearly demonstrated that its programmable solutions are highly valuable to us, and the flexibility and time-to-market advantages they provide are critical, especially in the face of rapid market changes.  Our decade-long partnership has been instrumental in making us the highly successful provider of networking and telecom solutions that Huawei is today.”

"On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, I'd like to congratulate Altera for its long history of providing leading-edge programmable solutions,” stated Tony Kobrinetz, vice president and general manager of Canopy wireless broadband products at Motorola.  “Altera programmable logic helps reinforce our market leadership areas by enabling us to offer unique and compelling products like our Canopy wireless broadband system.  The Altera FPGAs give us the ability to virtually reconfigure the hardware, which provides additional customization and value to Canopy customers.  Congratulations, Altera!”

“When we first began using Altera products in 1994, programmable logic was considered a convenient option by our engineers,” noted Bon-cheol Koo, senior research engineer at LG Electronics.  “In the years that have followed, Altera has greatly increased the value proposition of their offering, such that their FPGAs and CPLDs are now an essential element in the design of our products.  We could not achieve the kind of success we have enjoyed without the flexibility, time-to-market, and development cost advantages provided by Altera’s programmable logic solutions.”

“Twenty years is a tremendous milestone and proof point for Altera's programmable logic solutions,” said Jeff Allen, senior vice president of marketing for BlueArc.  “The Altera programmable logic at the heart of BlueArc's SiliconServer architecture makes it uniquely capable of addressing the changing problems of data storage with unmatched performance, flexibility, and reliability.  We congratulate Altera on its two decades of providing leading-edge programmable solutions, and look forward to their continued innovation and the performance advantages we will enjoy as a result.”

“After a partnership of 10 years, we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Altera on its 20th anniversary,” said Huang Li Qing, vice president of the transmission department of Zhongxing Telecom Equipment (ZTE) Corporation.  “Altera’s broad product offering helps us to extend our technology lead.  Moreover, Altera offers the most powerful software environment for product design, which enables us to complete our designs in a fraction of time, while maintaining high performance.”
