Altera Tops CPLD Market in 2002

New Semico Report Names Altera as #1 Supplier

San Jose, Calif., April 30, 2003— Building upon its eight years of uninterrupted CPLD market leadership, Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) today announced that its MAX® devices are the unchallenged leader of the complex programmable logic device (CPLD) market. According to a report released by Semico Research Corporation, Altera led the CPLD market in 2002 with 44.4 percent share of the $504 million CPLD market. In the report, Semico Research forecasts good growth for this market over the next three to four years.

"Altera's focus on CPLD customer requirements over the years has developed a massive following of design engineers in every major market worldwide," said John Daane, president and CEO for Altera. "Year after year, Altera delivers. That's why Altera's MAX devices are an unstoppable force in the CPLD market."

CPLDs, which comprise the instant-on, non-volatile segment of the programmable logic market, provide designers with numerous time-to-market advantages, including superior pin-to-pin performance, low-cost, and ease-of-use. Ideal for control-oriented applications such as I/O expansion, bus translation, and power-up sequencing, the benefits of CPLDs are leveraged in a wide variety of electronic products, ranging from sophisticated wireless communications systems to small consumer electronics devices.

Altera's MAX devices are now supported by the industry-leading Quartus® II design software. By using the Quartus II design software, MAX device design performance is boosted by up to 10 percent over the use of previous generation design tools. Furthermore, new algorithms within the Quartus II design software deliver superior results for pin-locked designs.

"Thanks to their timing and performance, CPLDs continue to play an important role in a broad range of applications," said Rich Wawrzyniak, senior analyst, of Semico Research. "As we go forward, we should expect to see continued increases in performance and functionality of CPLDs as vendors turn to new process technologies."
