Motorola Broadband To Integrate Altera FPGAs In New High-Definition Satellite Receiver

San Jose, Calif., December 29, 2003—Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) today announced that Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) Broadband Communications Sector has selected Altera® Cyclone™ FPGAs for use in the new Motorola Digital Satellite Receiver (DSR) 500 family of high-definition (HD) satellite receivers.  The Motorola DSR500 is a next-generation high-end consumer satellite receiver with integrated HD decoder, supporting a wide array of home entertainment options, including HD-capable TVs and monitors, standard television sets, VCRs and home theater systems.  The Altera Cyclone FPGA implements critical functions in the DSR500 family of products, bridging advanced decoder and processor circuits and managing bandwidth from the front-end satellite tuners and demodulators.

“We chose to integrate the functionality of the Cyclone FPGA into the new DSR500 family of high-performance satellite receivers because of the many benefits field-programmable gate arrays can add to the engineering and manufacturing processes, including shortening the development cycle,” said Simon Rizk, senior director of engineering for satellite STB products, Motorola Broadband.

Developers of high-volume consumer products are increasingly relying on Altera devices to meet stringent time-to-market demands as well as requirements for low cost. “Motorola’s choice of Altera products for their digital satellite receivers underscores the attractiveness of our low-cost FPGAs for price-sensitive applications,” said Todd Scott, director of Altera’s broadcast and consumer business unit.  “The low-cost structure of Cyclone FPGAs is ideal for high-volume digital consumer products, and industry leaders like Motorola can rely upon them to increase their flexibility, shorten their design cycles, and reduce their development costs.”
