Altera First Semiconductor Company in Santa Clara County Certified as a Green Business
San Jose, Calif., EARTH DAY, April 22, 2004—Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) today announced that it is the first semiconductor company in Santa Clara County, Calif. to be certified as a Green Business. The Green Business Program is a voluntary program that recognizes businesses that commit to full compliance with environmental regulations and take steps to prevent pollution, reduce waste, and conserve resources. Altera will be recognized during the San Jose City Council meeting on April 27 for its commitment to conserve resources and reduce waste and pollution at its San Jose campus.
“Altera is among the leaders in Silicon Valley in protecting the environment. They have shown this by implementing practices that decrease energy and water consumption, in addition to limiting the amount of waste going to the landfills, all of which also reduce operating costs. They are setting an outstanding example and we are confident that other large companies in the Valley will see the environmental and cost benefits and follow their lead,” said Lisa Rose, green business coordinator, County of Santa Clara.
Altera began implementing environmentally friendly measures in 1993. This commitment to the environment has not only resulted in less waste, energy use and water consumption, but has also resulted in a significant cost savings for the company.

Through energy savings projects, including the installation of light sensors in conference rooms and smaller air conditioners for after-hours cooling, Altera saves an average of $70,000 annually.

Recent installation of variable frequency drives on the existing chiller systems are projected to save an average of $30,000 annually.

Reduction of trash through the revision of recycling and in-house shredding programs has reduced waste disposal costs by approximately $100,000 annually and has reduced the amount of waste for landfill disposal from 230 tons to 138 tons annually.

Prepaid Cal-Train, ACE Train, and Amtrak Capital Corridor passes for employees, coupled with the Altera commuter bus, contribute to reducing automobile pollution and traffic congestion.
“Altera’s Green Business program certification illustrates the company’s commitment to implementing environmentally friendly initiatives,” said Bob Wingo, director of facilities at Altera. “We have established programs that reduce waste and pollution, conserve resources, and reuse valuable recyclable materials. Through our energy saving programs and our ongoing waste-management efforts, we have reduced costs and successfully achieved the environmental standards set forth by the Green Business program.”
