Altera Now Shipping All Major Product Families in Lead-Free Packaging

San Jose, Calif., April 28, 2004—Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) today announced that it is shipping lead-free devices in production volumes across all of its major FPGA and CPLD product families.  The company’s Stratix, Stratix GX, Cyclone, APEX, ACEX, FLEX, Mercury, MAX, and configuration device families have been qualified in lead-free packaging ranging from 8-pin small-outline integrated circuit (SOIC) packages to the 1,508-pin flip-chip FineLine ball-grid arrays (FBGA) packages.

“Our company had a goal to lead the industry in delivering the first completely lead-free projector early this year,” said Kaoru Ikeda, purchasing team leader, Panasonic AVC Networks.  “Altera’s early commitment to our goal, ahead of other semiconductor vendors, enabled us to deliver lead-free production systems on schedule and ahead of our competitors.  We are extremely grateful for Altera’s indispensable support.”

Commitment to Environmentally Friendly Solutions

Committed to supporting environmentally friendly initiatives, Altera began lead-free product development in 2000 and began shipping production quantities to customers in 2002.  All of Altera’s lead-free products meet the requirements of the European Parliament’s RoHS directive, an initiative to reduce the content of hazardous substances in electronic equipment.  They also meet the requirements of Japan’s Ministry of Trade and Industry (MITI) to use only lead-free solder in all new products.

“The availability of devices in lead-free packages is becoming an increasingly important decision criterion for many customer designs,” said David Greenfield, senior director of product marketing at Altera.  “The breadth of Altera’s lead-free product portfolio provides a compelling solution for customers transitioning to these environmentally friendly products.”

Availability

Altera’s lead-free package offerings include the Stratix, Stratix GX, Cyclone, APEX, ACEX, FLEX, Mercury, MAX, and configuration device families.  Altera will offer lead-free solutions for all future FPGA and CPLD product families.
