Altera Corporation Mourns Passing of Rodney Smith, former CEO
San Jose, Calif., May 29, 2007—Altera Corporation (NASDAQ: ALTR) today mourns the passing of its former CEO, Rodney Smith, who passed away last Friday. Mr. Smith served as the company’s first CEO in 1983 and retired as chairman of the board in 2003.
“When Rodney joined the company as our CEO in 1983, he helped us turn our invention of the first reprogrammable logic device into reality,” said Paul Newhagen, one of Altera’s founders. “He had great energy and he was a strong leader. With his many interests and his attention to detail, he brought a breadth of important experience to the new company. As CEO, he pioneered the fabless business model. Today, both PLD’s and the fabless business model are standards used worldwide throughout the electronics industry.”
“Rodney’s drive for continuous innovation and quality are just some of the values that still live on at Altera and which remain the foundation for our success,” said Altera’s president, CEO and chairman of the board, John Daane. “Together with our employees, I would like to extend our sincerest sympathies to his wife, Mary and to the rest of his family.”
