Industrial Fieldbuses
There are many industrial fieldbuses actively in use today, for example, CANopen, DeviceNet, SERCOS, Interbus, PROFIBUS, and so on. The fieldbus revolutionized industrial automation, but today many of them are struggling to deliver the levels of performance and interoperability required by the market.
This is driving equipment manufacturers toward Ethernet-based communications. However, there is a huge install base of fieldbus-based equipment, and developing ways to integrate with Ethernet based systems or systems that use other fieldbuses is a very important feature for industrial customers.
Just as the programmability of an FPGA brings the ability to support many industrial Ethernet standards, it also enables the ability to support many different fieldbuses. The FPGA provides the hardware functionality required, and you can use the Nios® II processor to provide functions such as data formatting, conversion, and other features well suited to software.
Adescom offers a fully certified and DPC31 compatible PROFIBUS DP slave intellectual property (IP) core that offers DPV0, DPV1, and parts of DPV2 functionality. The hardware is implemented in VHDL and is delivered with a software stack that runs on the Nios II processor. The core has been implemented and verified using the third-party EBV DBC2C20 development board.
