IP Base Suite Questions and Answers

The following are answers to frequently asked questions about the Altera® IP Base Suite.

Q. What is the IP Base Suite?
A. The Altera IP Base Suite is a set of perpetual licenses for full-featured versions of some of the most popular Altera intellectual property (IP) cores:

  • Finite Impulse Response (FIR) Compiler
  • Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) Compiler
  • Numerically Controlled Oscillator (NCO) Compiler
  • DDR SDRAM Controller
  • DDR SDRAM High-Performance Controller
  • DDR2 SDRAM Controller
  • DDR2 SDRAM High-Performance Controller
  • DDR3 SDRAM High-Performance Controller
  • QDRII SRAM Controller
  • RLDRAM II Controller
  • SerialLite II

Q. Can I get a free license to the IP Base Suite?
A. The entire Altera IP Base Suite comes free with Quartus® II Subscription Edition development software. Users of other Quartus II products, such as Web Edition or Development Kit Edition, can still access Altera IP cores in the IP Base Suite by utilizing Altera's unique hardware evaluation feature.

Q. As an active Quartus II subscriber, how do I access the cores in the IP Base Suite?
A. The cores in the IP Base Suite are part of the MegaCore® IP Library. The library can be installed from the Quartus II DVD shipped to active subscribers. If you did not receive the Quartus II DVD, you can download the MegaCore IP Library from the Altera Download Center.

Q. How do I get a license file to take advantage of the IP Base Suite?
A. If you are not a user of Quartus II Subscription Edition, or if you are a user of other Quartus II products, such as Web Edition or Development Kit Edition, you can have either fixed node or floating licenses issued, depending on your Quartus II license type. Simply visit the Software Subscription License section of Altera’s licensing website to create or update your license file:

Q. I'm already an active Quartus II subscriber. Do I get the IP Base Suite?
A. Yes! Simply follow the instructions above, visit Altera’s licensing website, and update your license file. You will be issued either fixed node or floating licenses depending on your Quartus II license type.

Q. How is my license to the IP Base Suite different from the OpenCore Plus evaluation feature?
A. The free OpenCore Plus evaluation feature allows you to generate models, simulate them using industry-standard simulators, and generate time-limited FPGA program files. You must purchase a valid license when you decide to go to full production. The free perpetual IP Base Suite license allows you to use the IP cores for full production purposes.

Q. Where can I get more details about the IP Base Suite?
A. Complete details are available on Altera's IP Base Suite licenses web page.

Q. What if my Quartus II subscription has expired?
A. If you already downloaded a license for the IP Base Suite, you can continue to use the older core versions that were released at that time indefinitely. To use the latest IP Base Suite cores, and the new IP cores added to the IP Base Suite, you must either purchase a renewal license for the IP Base Suite (IPSR-BASE) or renew your Quartus II subscription.
