Notes:

  1. The SOPC Builder tool supports Windows Vista in version 7.2 Service Pack 1.
  2. Windows XP Professional x64 operating system is supported running the Quartus II software, which contains both 32-bit and 64-bit native applications. The advantage of running a 32-bit application on a 64-bit hardware/software platform is improved performance from access to increased memory.
  3. Testing of Quartus II software versions 4.1 and 4.1 Service Pack 2 with Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 has been completed. Only two minor issues were found, and both issues have workarounds. While no major issues were identified, Altera recommends you use the official support in Quartus II software versions 4.2 and later with Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2. MAX+PLUS II software has not been tested with Windows XP Service Pack 2.
  4. Quartus II software version 5.0 and supporting service packs are the last releases to include support for Windows NT 4.0 and Red Hat Linux 7.3.
  5. Future Linux support for Quartus II software includes both Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Enterprise Linux.
  6. Quartus II software version 5.1 and supporting service packs are the last releases to support Red Hat Linux 8.0 and HP-UX 11.0.
    • Quartus II software version 7.2 and supporting service packs are the last releases to include support for Solaris 8 and 9.
    • Yes = Operating system is currently supported; No = Operating system is not currently supported.

Quartus II Web Edition software is available free and Quartus II Subscription Edition software is for sale as part of the Altera Subscription Program. The Altera Subscription Program web page shows which products are best suited for various design environments.

Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 Compatibility Issues

Issue 1:

If you install the Windows XP Service Pack 2 update after Quartus II software, the ByteBlaster™ drivers must be reinstalled to get device programming functions working again. The instructions to reinstall the driver are:

Cd quartus\drivers\i386
Bblpt.exe /r                                      —removes the ByteBlaster driver
Bblpt /i                                               —reinstalls the ByteBlaster driver
Net start ALTERABYTEBLASTER

Issue 2:

The HardCopy® power estimation command in the HardCopy Utilities menu is unable to transfer the power file across the Internet to the PowerPlay early power estimator. As a result, the file containing the power parameters is displayed in the web browser. To work around this problem, you must allow active content to run on your computer. To allow active content to run, perform the following steps in Internet Explorer:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Settings list, turn on "Allow active content to run in files on My Computer".
