Problem
What is the difference between an open peripheral component interconnect (PCI) system and a closed PCI system? (PCI)
Solution
In an open system, components from independent sources must work together. A personal computer is an example of an open system, where the motherboard, ethernet card, and video card are all from different manufacturers, but they all most work together within the computer. In an open PCI system, each part must comply to PCI specifications, and a standard product or custom chip is generally used.In a closed system the designer has control over all components in the system. Most PLD designs are are in closed systems. In a closed PCI system, there are fewer than 10 loads (PCI specification), and compliance to PCI specification is not required.
