A. You need a valid license file to run these types of software:

  • Quartus® II
  • Quartus II Web Edition
  • MAX+PLUS® II
  • ModelSim®-Altera Edition
  • ModelSim-Altera Web Edition
  • DSP Builder
  • IP MegaCore®

Q. How do I get a license file for Altera software?
A. You can request a license file on the Altera Software Licensing web page.

Q. Why hasn't my license file arrived by email yet?
A. Although most license files are sent a few minutes after they are requested, it may take up to 24 hours for you to receive a license file after requesting it. You will not receive the license file if you entered an incorrect email address.

Q. How do I set up a license?
A. You can find instructions about how to set up licenses for Altera software in AN 340: Altera Software Licensing (PDF).

Q. How do I troubleshoot a licensing problem?
A. There are several resources available to help troubleshoot licensing problems, including the following:

Q. What should I do when my license expires?
A. Subscription customers can continue using software after expiration but will no longer be able to install new software releases. By purchasing a renewal subscription you can receive all of the latest software updates for an additional 12 months.

If you are using the Quartus II Web Edition software, MAX+PLUS II BASELINE software, or ModelSim-Altera Web Edition software, you can request a new license file at the Altera Software Licensing web page.

Q. Can I transfer my license to a co-worker?
A. You can submit a mySupport service request to arrange this.

Q. How do I know what software my license enables?
A. You can see what software your license enables by checking in the license file. Lines beginning with FEATURE or INCREMENT list the software enabled by the license. See Table 5 in AN 340: Altera Software Licensing (PDF) for information about how to determine which software corresponds to each FEATURE or INCREMENT line.
