Floating License Server on Windows

Home > Support > Design Software > Licensing > Floating License Server on Windows

These instructions are for network or system administrators who install license files on network license servers. Before the license is available to individual users, the administrator must set up a PC workstation as the license server.

Note: For redundant server configuration, all the servers must be running to ensure that they communicate with one another. The majority of servers listed in the license file must be running before you can set up the network license server.

To set up a network license server on Windows, you can either refer to the instructions on the Floating License Server for Linux/Solaris web page for the command line steps or complete the following steps using the UI method.

  1. Make a backup copy of any existing license.dat file for future reference.
  2. Get the port number and host name. This information can also be found in the license file line beginning with the word SERVER. For example,

SERVER <hostname> <8 or 12 character host or NIC ID> <port>. For example,

    SERVER myserver 00B0D0ABEAEC 1800

The license location for the user is <port>@<hostname>. For example,

    1800@myserver

If a port is not listed in the license.dat file, specify @<hostname>.

  3. Open lmtools.exe from <Quartus II install>\bin. The LMTOOLS user interface appears, as shown in Figure 1.

  4. Click the Config Services tab.
  5. On the Configure Service page, specify the service name (for example, alterad). For Path to the lmgrd.exe file, Path to the license file, and Path to the debug log file, browse to the directories where the files are stored (lmgrd.exe is stored at <Quartus II install>\bin). Turn on Use Services and Start Server at Power Up. Click Save Service to save your settings (refer to Figure 2).

  6. Click the Start/Stop/Reread tab, select the service name from the list, and click Start Server. The status at the bottom of the screen shows that the server started up successfully.

Use Stop Server to stop the server, and use ReRead License File when you modify the license file and the server needs to be refreshed (refer to Figure 3).

At Service/License File, the service name you selected is shown (refer to Figure 4).
