Primary Benefit
  • Cost reduction for ASI and SDI functions by up to 90 percent
Additional Benefits
  • Smaller board size
  • Obsolescence proof
  • Design flexibility
  • Support for non-standard numbers of ASI ports or SDI channels
Standard ICs Integrated
  • ASI ASSPs
  • SD-SDI ASSPs
  • HD-SDI ASSPs

In broadcasting production and delivery systems, digital video data is generally transported using one of two serial interface formats: video serial digital interface (SDI) for uncompressed, and asynchronous serial interface (ASI) for compressed. While broadcast equipment developers have traditionally used ASSPs for implementing SDI and ASI functions, these interfaces can also be implemented in programmable logic devices (PLDs) by using their logic and other embedded resources to build the required individual digital functions.

By using programmable logic instead of ASSPs, broadcast equipment developers can significantly reduce overall costs. In some cases, the programmable logic equivalent can be less than one-tenth of the ASSP cost on a per-ASI channel or per-SDI port basis. The strength of Altera’s ASI and SDI solutions have resulted in their adoption by leading broadcast equipment developers like TANDBERG Television and Miranda Technologies.
