The Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) is an initiative to define a publicly available specification that standardizes the protocol interface between the radio equipment control (REC) and the radio equipment (RE) in wireless basestations. CPRI allows the use of a distributed architecture where basestations, containing the REC, are connected to remote radio heads via lossless fibre links that carry the CPRI data. This architecture reduces costs for service providers because only the remote radio heads containing the RE need to be situated in environmentally challenging locations. The basestations can be centrally located in less challenging locations where footprint, climate, and availability of power are more easily managed. Intel offers the following two variants of the CPRI intellectual property (IP):

  • IP-CPRI as a MegaCore® function: this is Intel legacy CPRI offering that supports up to CPRI V5.0. This IP is offered for legacy designs and is not recommend for newer designs. No updates to this IP are planned. The IP-CPRI is supported on the following devices.

  • IP-CPRI-V6: This is Intel's latest CPRI IP core that supports up to CPRI V7.0 standard and is available on selected Cyclone®, Arria®, and Stratix® devices. This core supports 8B/10B and 64B/66B encoding with line rates from 614.4 up to 10.1376 Mbps. (12165.12GHz in 2016, 24330.24 in 2017). The maximum number of AxC containers is 40 with a bit-width from 4-20. Device and family support for IP-CPRI-V6 is shown in the following table.
