Meeting the Growing Bandwidth Needs with NFV

As the demand for network services continues to grow, operators are continually challenged to meet client needs driven by more devices, more videos and exciting next-generation applications that require low latency and high bandwidth.  These ever-increasing demands chew up network resources creating a challenge for operators to control both capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating expenses (OPEX) as they expand their capacity and grow their capabilities.  Further, network operators have the challenge of increasing network capabilities so that they can accelerate the rollout of new revenue generating services while reducing the cost of providing traditional networking services.

NFV Meets FPGA

Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) has emerged as a means of providing the necessary resource flexibility to ensure high utilization, high level of programmability to cover diverse workloads and is built on common off-the-shelf (COTS) infrastructure to provide cost effective deployment.  As a step further to increasing the capabilities and cost-effective scaling of these virtualized systems, FPGAs can be utilized as an additional programmable COTS element to provide energy and cost-saving acceleration.

Intel® FPGAs can be programmed to deliver a wide range of high-bandwidth and low-latency functions that augment the capabilities of Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) running on a carrier cloud.  As demands shift and change over time, Intel FPGAs can be reprogrammed to optimally address the new requirements.  Intel FPGAs have been used for many decades to accelerate a wide range of networking, compute and storage workloads making them a versatile common new programmable component for carrier clouds.
