1. Q. Do I need a license file to use Intel FPGA software or IP?

A. You need a valid license file to run the following software:

  • Intel Quartus Prime Pro or Standard Edition software and prior subscription versions of Intel Quartus development software
  • MAX+PLUS® II
  • ModelSim*-Intel FPGA Edition
  • DSP Builder for Intel FPGAs
  • Intel FPGA intellectual property (IP) 

Intel Quartus Prime Lite Edition software, Lite editions of previous Intel Quartus development software, ModelSim-Intel FPGA Starter Edition software, and Intel FPGA IP functions do not require license files.

2. Q. How do I get a license file for Intel FPGA software or IP?
A. You can request a license file by logging on to the new Self-Service Licensing Center page using your Intel FPGA ID. If you do not already have an Intel FPGA ID, you can register for one on this site.

3. Q. Do I need a license to evaluate Intel FPGA software or IP?
A. You do not need a license to evaluate the Intel Quartus Prime or prior versions of Intel Quartus development software; the evaluation period is 30 days. A license file is required to evaluate DSP Builder for Intel FPGAs softwares. Your local Intel sales person can provide you with the license. Intel FPGA IP is enabled for no-cost Intel FPGA IP Evaluation Mode immediately upon installation. No license file is required. 4. Q. Do I have to know what machine(s) an Intel FPGA software or IP product will be hosted on before placing an order?
A. No, this information is not required when you order. You can view your licenses, assign them to machines, and get a license by visiting the Self-Service Licensing Center page.

5. Q. I just bought a software subscription and/or an IP core license and received an email. How do I get my license?
A. The email you received has a URL that will take you directly to the Self-Service Licensing Center page. Simply log in using your Intel FPGA ID and follow the Create New Licenses steps.

6. Q. Am I the only person who can view and obtain licenses?
A. Two user types are assigned to each product license; an adminstrator and a licensed user. If you are the administrator and the license user is shown as 'unassigned' on the Self-Service Licensing Center page, you are the only person who can view and obtain licenses. If you assign the license to another user, the licensed user can also view and obtain licenses.

7. Q. What is a companion license?
A. A companion license grants license portability to a fixed product license. Each fixed product can be assigned to up to three computers: an office, a lab, and a home computer as long as all are only used by the same person. The license restricts the user to only one computer at a time.

8. Q. What is a checkout license?
A. A checkout license enables portability for users with only floating seat licenses. The license administrator can issue a two-week fixed license allowing one of the users to have access to the same product licenses from the network while traveling with a laptop.

9. Q.Why hasn't my license file arrived by email yet?
A. Although most license files are sent a few minutes after they are requested, it may take up to 24 hours for you to receive a license file after requesting it. You will not receive the license file if the email address provided was incorrect. You can also access your license by going to the License History section in the Self-Service Licensing Center.

10. Q. How do I set up a license?
A. You can find instructions about how to set up licenses for Intel FPGA software in the Intel FPGA Software Installation and Licensing Manual and MAX+PLUS II licensing page.

11. Q. Do I need to activate my software?
A. Yes, if you purchase a product software online from the Intel FPGA eStore you must activate it before you can obtain a license. Also, if you do not see a maintenance expiration date for your license on the Self-Service Licensing Center page, you must first activate your product software. 12. Q. Where can I get a license for the Intel Quartus development software for versions prior to 8.1?
A. You can get a license using the Legacy License Generator.

13. Q. Where can I get information on the release dates for different Intel Quartus Prime or previous versions of Intel Quartus development software?

14. Q. How do I know whether I am purchasing a perpetual or non perpetual license?
A. Only licenses for development kits are non-perpetual licenses. Licenses for other softwares are perpetual licenses.

15. Q. How can I purchase Intel FPGA software online?
A. To purchase Intel FPGA software online, visit the Design Software page. After the license order is placed, the license will be process and available in the Self-Service Licensing Center within 2-7 days. 1. Q. How do I know which software my license enables?
A. You can see which software your license enables by checking the header at the top of your license file. The header outlines the type of license, the license expiration date (if applicable), and all products included in the license file. For more information, refer to the Intel FPGA Software Installation and Licensing Quick Start.

2. Q. What version of software and IP does my license support?
A. Intel uses the maintenance expiration date to indicate which versions of Intel Quartus development software and IP core can be used. All versions of the product released prior to the maintenance expiration date can be used. A listing of all software release versions and release dates can be found in our design software archives. Intel FPGA IP has been shipping in the combined download with the Intel Quartus development software since version 4.1 was released in July 2004.

3. Q. How do I know when / if my license expires?
A. There are two types of expiration: maintenance and license. Maintenance expiration only controls which versions of a product can be used. The license expiration determines whether the product stops working entirely. License files issued on or after July 5, 2010 have a header at the top of the file. The header indicates the type of license and states whether there is a license expiration or not. If yes, the date is provided for each product in the license. Another way to look this up is to select the product license on the Self-Service Licensing Center page and view product details. In the license expiration field, you'll either see a specific date or it will be blank. Blank means the license is perpetual with no license expiration.

4. Q. What happens when my maintenance expires?
A. Maintenance expiration controls the version(s) of the product that can be used. Maintenance expiration does not cause the license itself to stop working. If you renew the maintenance, you will be able to use all of the latest releases and updates for an additional 12 months.

5. Q. What should I do when my license expires?
A. Evaluation and other types of licenses have an expiration date. If you have one of these licenses and pass the expiration date, the product will stop working. Purchasing a full software or IP core license will give you a perpetual license with no license expiration date.

If you are using the MAX+PLUS® II BASELINE software, you can request a new license file at the Intel FPGA Software Licensing web page.

6. Q. Can I transfer my license to a co-worker?
A.
If you are the license administrator, you can transfer your license by assigning someone else as the licensed user through the Manage Users section on the Self-Service Licensing Center page. Feel free to view our short videos or read our user guides with steps on how to transfer your license to a co-worker. If you have further issues, please file a service request through mySupport.

7. Q. I have a new PC, how do I transfer my license?
A. Transferring products from one computer to another is called rehosting your license. Software and IP licenses can be transferred to a different PC by going to the Create New License section on the Self-Service Licensing Center page. The listing of product licenses on this page includes the available rehosts. Select the products you want to transfer and then click Assign Computer.

8. Q. How many times can I transfer a product license?
A. The number of available rehosts is tracked on the Self-Service Licensing Center page for each software and IP product. It is provided in the last column of the table in the Create New License section. If you run out of available rehosts and still need to transfer a product license, please raise a service request through mySupport.

9. Q. I need to use an old version of Intel Quartus development software. Where can I get a license?
A. You do not need a new license file to use the older version of software as long as the version you want to use was released prior to the product's maintenance expiration date. A listing of all Intel Quartus development software releases and their release dates can be found on our website.

10. Q. I need to obtain a MAX+PLUS II software license. Where can I get one?
A. MAX+PLUS II software licenses can be requested on the Intel FPGA Software Licensing web page.

11. Q. Why can't I see all of my product licenses on the Self-Service Licensing Center page?
A. There are two primary reasons why product licenses are not visible to you on the Self-Service Licensing Center page. The maintenance expiration date is prior to January 1, 2009 or you are not shown in our system as the administrator or licensed user for the product(s). Licenses for products whose maintenance expiration is prior to 1/1/2009 can be generated by following the Generate Legacy License links in the left navigation of the Self-Service Licensing Center page. You will need to know the computer ID in order to get the license file. To know more, please feel free to view our short videos or read our user guides for steps on how to obtain a license file. 12. Q. How do I transfer floating seats from one computer to another?
A. We refer to this as split floating licenses on the Self-Service Licensing Center page. Select split floating licenses from the left navigation bar or licensing home page. The eligible floating licenses are displayed. You can then select the product from which you want to remove or transfer licenses and click Split. After you have entered the number of seats to be split, the newly split seats will be shown as separate product licenses. If the licenses were previously assigned to a computer, you will need to rehost them onto the appropriate machine. Use the Create New Licenses page to do this rehost.

13. Q. How do I get a license for my Intel FPGA T-Guard or dongle?
A. The Intel FPGA T-Guard or dongle is treated like a fixed node computer on the Self-Service Licensing Center page. You can select one or more products on the Create New Licenses page and then Create New Computer using the T-Guard or dongle number as the ID. The primary computer type on the Create New Computer page must be selected as 'Guard ID'.

14. Q. I bought a development kit that comes together with an Intel Quartus development software license. How do I activate my license?
A. The development kit comes with a serial number that is stated either on the box or a customer letter. This serial number serves as a license activation code to activate your Intel Quartus development software license via the Self-Service Licensing Center. Check if the software DKE license is visible in the Products and Users View in Self-Service Licensing Center. If the license is visible, no activation is needed. You may proceed to create the new license file. If the license is not visible, the serial number will be the activation code for you to activate the license. 2. Q. Is ModelSim-Intel FPGA Starter Edition software free?
A. Yes, ModelSim-Intel FPGA Starter Edition software is free. You do not need a license to run this software.

3. Q. My Intel FPGA software is about to expire. Do I buy a license renewal or a brand new license?
A. You can purchase a renewal for Intel FPGA software if the maintenance has not yet expired or if the maintenance expired less than 30 days ago. Otherwise, purchase a brand new license. Contact your local sales person for details about purchasing a license or renewal.

4. Q. My Intel FPGA IP core maintenance expired a year ago. Can I renew? Is there a penalty for the lapse?
A. Although we strongly recommend that customers keep their IP core licenses current on maintenance, we do allow them to lapse. Maintenance resumes beginning with the date the renewal was purchased and runs for 12 months. We do not currently require payment for the lapse period as part of the renewal.

5. Q. Does a 60-day evaluation license include the option to generate encrypted .POF files and decryption keys for the EP3CLS device family?
A.
No, the evaluation license does not include the security feature.

6. Q. What is the feature line in a subscription license file that indicates whether the encryption generation is active?
A. When the encryption generation is active, you can find 'FEATURE quartus_nonvolatile_encryption' in the license file.

7. Q. Is encryption included in a subscription license?
A. Yes, encryption is included for new subscription license. We include it as a standard option towards the end of 2011.

8. Q. Why doesn't my companion license work for ModelSim-Intel FPGA Edition software?
A. Currently, Intel does not support companion licensing for ModelSim-Intel FPGA software. Please refer to the Mentor Graphics* ModelSim and QuestaSim Support chapter of the Intel Quartus Prime Handbook.

9. Q. Do I need to purchase an Intel FPGA IP license if I use IP with the Intel Quartus Prime Lite Edition or previous lite versions of Intel Quartus development software?
A. Yes, you will need to purchase the Intel FPGA IP license if you wish to use it with the Intel Quartus Prime Lite Edition or previous lite versions of the Intel Quartus development software. Please refer to Compare Pro, Standard, and Lite Editions (PDF) and contact your local sales for the IP price.

10. Q: How do I purchase a license with netlist encryption capabilities?

11. Q: Do I need a license for Intel FPGA evaluation software or IP?
A. You do not need a license file to evaluate the Intel Quartus development software for a period of 30 days. You do need an evaluation license to evaluate the DSP Builder for Intel FPGAs. Please contact the Intel Sales Support Offices to request for the evaluation license file. Intel FPGA IP is enabled for a no-cost Intel FPGA IP Evaluation Mode, which is available upon installation. 12. Q. I have an EXPIRED: alteramtivsim, modelsim. However, it should be perpetual.
A. The ModelSim-Intel FPGA Edition software license expires 12 months after the date of purchase. Every 12 months you must regenerate your license file on the Self-Service Licensing Center page to renew your license for the specific ModelSim-Intel FPGA Edition software version that you purchased. You can find more information in the ModelSim-Intel FPGA software reference page.

13. Q. Why can't I find my university products on the Self-Service Licensing Center page?
A. Self Service for Intel University Program was launched in September 30, 2011. Only licenses granted after the launch are visible on the Self-Service Licensing Center page. For enquiries on licenses granted before the date, send an email to psg.university@intel.com.

14. Q. How can I stop older versions of the Intel Quartus development software or IP from using newer floating network licenses?
