Why is the BoardTestSystem (BTS) GUI stating “Cannot find USB Blaster” even though the USB-Blaster is connected and the Quartus II programmer is able to recognize it?

Environment

BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
Description

A possible reason that the BTS GUI is stating it cannot find the USB-Blaster™ is because the environment variable was not set correctly, so the BTS GUI is looking at the wrong path.

For example, if you have a Windows 7 64-bit machine during the Quartus® II software installation it will install both a 32bit and a 64bit version onto the PC. If you open the 32-bit version of the Quartus II software and then open the 64-bit version of the Quartus II software at a later time the environment variable will be set for the 64-bit version of the Quartus II software. The BTS GUI will need the environment variable to be set pointing to the 32-bit version of the Quartus II software installation.

Resolution

If you are using the Quartus II software in 64-bit mode you will need to start the 32-bit version of the Quartus II software prior to using the BTS GUI so that it can overwrite the environment variable with the correct value.

Also if the GUI is requesting for a specific version of the Quartus II software, you will need to open the 32-bit version of that Quartus II software release. For example, if you are using version 11.1sp2, then you will need to open the 32-bit version of the Quartus II software version 11.1sp2 to over write the environment with the correct variable before opening the BTS GUI.
