Why does the Nios II Flash Programmer produce the error “Empty flash content cannot be programmed or verified” when you run the flash programmer to program CFI flash memory?

Environment

Description

The Nios® II Flash Programmer will generate this error message when the reset vector of Nios II CPU has not been set as CFI flash memory in SOPC Builder.

 

To resolve this error message, follow these steps:

  1. Open your project in SOPC Builder and double click on CPU to open the Nios II Processor Window.
  2. In Core Nios II tab, select the CFI flash memory (e.g.: ext_flash) device from the Reset Vector Memory pull-down menu.
  3. Click on Finish.
  4. Regenerate the SOPC Builder system, then recompile the Quartus II project.
