How do I setup the environment of a workstation or PC for the Nios II tools to run properly?

Environment

  • Nios® II Processor
  • BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
    Description

If you are installing the Quartus® II tool (which includes SOPC Builder) and the Nios® II EDS on the same machine from where they will be run, then you should not have to manually change anything in the environment of the workstation or PC.  If this is the case, you should not be concerned with the rest of the information in this solution.

If you want a different installation structure, such as a tool server with clients accessing the tools across a network, then you may need to make some environment settings.  Before installing the Nios II EDS, make sure that Quartus II has been installed properly.  Refer to the installation manual for Quartus II (http://www.altera.com/literature/lit-qts.jsp) for details.  After proper installation, the QUARTUS_ROOTDIR environment variable should point to the Quartus II installation path.

Refer to the Nios II EDS release notes (<Nios II install directory>/documents/relnotes.pdf or http://www.altera.com/support/ip/processors/nios2/rn/ips-niosii-rn.html) for instructions on installing the Nios II EDS.  After installing the Nios II EDS, make sure that the SOPC_KIT_NIOS2 environment variable points to the Nios II EDS installation root directory, and that the SOPC_BUILDER_PATH_<version> environment variable contains this same directory amongst any other kit-paths (if any).  For the 6.0 version, the environment variable is SOPC_BUILDER_PATH_60.

Do not use spaces or any of the following characters in path names for the Nios II EDS:

    \ / : * ? " < > | !

    For Windows PCs:

To setup the registry for Cygwin to run properly, perform the following steps:

    1. Map a drive which points to the network share where the Quartus II installation resides. Feel free to use any method you wish.

Below is the syntax for the "net use" command at a DOS prompt. Make sure to choose an unused drive letter on the PC. The /persistent:yes option indicates that you want the drive to be mapped upon login to the PC.

      net use <drive letter>: <\computername\sharename> /persistent:yes

    2. Run the following command from a DOS prompt:

      %QUARTUS_ROOTDIR%/bin/perl561/bin/perl %QUARTUS_ROOTDIR%/sopc_builder/bin/regsopc.pl --quartus_root_dir=%QUARTUS_ROOTDIR%
