Can you use the Nios II Flash Programmer with HardCopy II devices?

Environment

Description

The Nios® II Flash Programmer can be used with HardCopy® II devices to program parallel CFI compliant flash devices.

For EPCS serial devices, the Nios II Flash Programmer can be used if you reserve four 3.3V general purpose I/O pins in your design.   The four reserved pins will be used as the active serial configuration pins DCLK, SDO, SCE and DATA0 which are not available in HardCopy II devices.

When using Quartus® II versions 8.0 or later, select a Hardcopy II device, from the Device Family pulldown menu in SOPC Builder.  This will cause the following signals to appear at the top of the SOPC Builder system after system generation:

  • dclk_from_the_epcs_controller
  • sce_from_the_epcs_controller
  • sdo_from_the_epcs_controller
  • data0_to_the_epcs_controller

The diagram, below, illustrates the connections you then make at the board-level in your design.

This diagram shows the connections between the general purpose I/O pins which will be used by the Nios flash programmer and the configuration pins that are used to load the Stratix® II configuration data.

Altera recommneds to use Quartus II version 8.0 or later.  Contact mySupport for help in supporting EPCS serial devices and HardCopy II devices with the Nios II Flash Programmer for Quartus II versions earlier than 8.0.
