Why does the nios2-terminal not echo input?

Environment

BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
Description The nios2-terminal command line program available within the Nios® II EDS behaves differently from the terminal available within the Nios II Software Build Tools for Eclipse (SBT).  Although the terminal within the SBT echos any user input to the terminal, the nios2-terminal only displays characters received on the UART.
