Error: Unexpected error in JTAG server -- error code 7

Environment

BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
Description

This error in the Quartus® II programmer can indicate that the JTAG Server is unable to determine the position of the device's Instruction Register (IR) within the chain's IR register.

Try the following:

Fully define the unknown/3rd party devices in the Quartus II programmer. To do this, double-click on the unknown device in the device column of the Programmer to bring up the 'Select New Device' dialog. Select 'Edit' to bring up the 'Edit Device' dialog and do the following:

  • Provide a name for the device, other than the default 'UNKNOWN_<IDCODE>'
  • Specifiy the instruction register length (this is what JTAG Server needs to fully resolve the chain) and the JTAG IDCODE

Select 'OK' in both the 'Edit Device' and 'Select New Device' dialog. Do this for each of the unknown devices.

  • Specify the device's JTAG ID and Register Length
