A New Chapter for Altera
Our FPGA and SoC FPGA platforms let customers process data in parallel, respond with deterministic low-latency performance, and evolve systems after deployment as workloads, standards, and security requirements change. Paired with developer-centric software, IP, ecosystem partnerships, and dedicated FPGA expertise, we help innovators accelerate development, reduce system complexity, and shape what’s next across communications, industrial automation, aerospace and defense, robotics, medical, automotive, and intelligent infrastructure.
Our Mission
To empower innovators with programmable silicon that enables intelligent, secure systems to adapt, perform, and evolve in a rapidly changing world.
Our Vision
To empower innovators to build technologies that make the world more intelligent, connected, secure, and responsive.
Four Decades of Programmable Logic Innovation
1983
Altera Founded
Altera launches in Silicon Valley around a bold idea: programmable, alterable hardware that customers can configure after manufacturing.
1984
EP300 and A+PLUS
Altera introduces the EP300, its first reprogrammable programmable logic device, and A+PLUS, an early PC-based development system, pairing programmable silicon with accessible design tools.
2002
Altera launches Stratix and Cyclone FPGAs
Altera launches the Stratix and Cyclone families: one aimed at high-performance applications and the other at cost-sensitive designs, expanding the company’s reach across more markets and system requirements.
2007
Altera introduces its first mid-range FPGA
The first mid-range FPGA marks another step in filling out Altera’s portfolio between entry-level and high-end programmable devices
2015
Intel acquires Altera
Intel completes its acquisition of Altera in December in a transaction valued at approximately $16.7 billion. Altera becomes the foundation of Intel’s Programmable Solutions Group, combining programmable logic with Intel computing and manufacturing capabilities.
2019
Altera launches Agilex FPGAs, its next-generation programmable platform
Altera introduces the Agilex FPGA family during the Intel era, representing the company’s continued progression
2025
Altera starts independent operations
Altera spun out of Intel and began operating independently once again, with Silver Lake taking a majority ownership stake.

The Right Architecture for the Right Workload
FPGAs don’t replace CPUs, GPUs, ASICs, or ASSPs. In most systems, FPGAs work alongside them, handling workloads where FPGAs’ programable logic adds the most value. The right architecture changes with every workload, every system constraint, and every lifecycle requirement. FPGAs can change right along with it.
