High-Performance DPU and AI NIC Architectures

In the high-stakes arena of Data Center Infrastructure Acceleration, Altera FPGAs have quietly established as the de facto leader for high-performance DPUs and AI NICs, with an estimated 90% market share at major CSPs in NA and PRC. For critical infrastructure tasks like OVS (Open vSwitch) offload, RDMA (Remote Direct Memory Access), and inline security, FPGAs are the cornerstone of modern CSP architectures. This dominance is not just based on performance, but on standard agility. Hyperscalers need a way to implement bespoke, highly optimized network data paths that are too unique for standard ASICs and too compute-intensive for CPUs. Altera FPGAs fabric is not only faster, but also remains at high performance even with 90%+ utilization. This has been the key enablers for customers.

This massive footprint exists is also because FPGAs are the only solution that can keep pace with evolving network protocols and security threats while delivering the deterministic, ultra-low latency required by next-generation AI and storage clusters. When milliseconds matter—as they do in GPUDirect AI training or NVMe-oF storage—the FPGA's ability to process data at wire speed without "asking the CPU for permission" is their ultimate performance moat. This allows CSPs to iterate on their infrastructure at the velocity of software, while the underlying hardware adapts to new standards instantly.
