The "Programmer Only" installation from the MAX+PLUS II Design Software Version 10.2 CD-ROM will not allow you to launch the MAX+PLUS II stand-alone programmer (ASAP2). Downloading and installing ASAP2_1023.exe from this web page will correct the problem.

1. Using either a or b, begin installation by executing the ASAP2_1023.exe file. 1. Type the following command at a DOS or command prompt: ASAP2_1023 2. Double-click the file name in the Windows Explorer (Windows 98, 2000, XP) or Windows NT Explorer (Windows NT 4.0).2. The MAX+PLUS II installation wizard is then unpacked and launches. In the Welcome page, click Next.3. After reading the license agreement, click Yes.4. Enter your name and company in the User Information page and click Next.5. Choose the items you wish to install in the Select Components page. By default, the ASAP2 software, on-line help, and readme files are selected for installation.6. Specify a destination directory for the MAX+PLUS II Programmer Only software installation. The installation program specifies the c:\maxplus2 directory by default. If you have a previous installation of MAX+PLUS II software, Altera recommends that you install the ASAP2 version 10.23 software into another directory. You can click on the Browse button to create or search for a directory (click OK to save your choice). Click Next when you are finished.7. Select a program folder in which the installation program will add program icons. Click Next and installation will begin.8. When installation is complete, you will be returned to your desktop. You can view the MAX+PLUS II 10.2 ReadMe file by selecting it from the MAX+PLUS II 10.2 Programmer Only menu in the Start menu.

The JRunner™ software driver is developed to configure SRAM-based programmable logic devices (PLDs) in JTAG mode for embedded configurations. You can customize the modular souce code's I/O control routines (provided as separate files) for your system. The JRunner driver supports the raw binary file (.rbf) format generated by the Quartus development software. The input file to the JRunner driver is in chain description file (.cdf) format. The JRunner software was developed and tested on the Windows NT, 2000, and XP platform. Note that JRunner cannot configure MAX 10 FPGA and Stratix 10 devices, you may refer to Jam STAPL Software if you wish to implement embedded configuration to these devices in JTAG mode.

SRunner is a free software driver developed for embedded serial configuration device programming, which can be easily customized to fit in different embedded systems. The availability of the SRunner software helps to reduce the amount of time and effort needed to develop an embedded environment to program an EPCS64, EPCS16, EPCS4, or EPCS1 device. You can simply download the source code and customize it for your embedded system. The input file supported is Raw Programming Data (.rpd) file. The SRunner software reads the RPD file and programs the data into the configuration device via the serial interface.
